But we've heard from many users who just want to be able to plug their phones into their PCs and sync everything. We looked at the Windows version of Missing Sync; there's also a Mac OS X version. The program requires a machine running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista SP1, or Windows 7.

- Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile for Insiders saw a substantial update late last week with the release of build 10149. I called it a 'turning point' for the nascent OS as this is the first build I would consider for daily use.
We used an Acer Aspire 1. T- 3. 72. 1 running Windows 7 to test the program.
To download The Missing Sync for Android on your PC, visit Mark/Space's Web site and choose your appropriate platform. We used the HTC EVO 4. G ($2. 99. 9. 9, ) and Motorola Droid X ($2. Android side. Running Missing Sync requires you to download three apps for your phone.
To download the Android apps, go to the Android Market and search for Missing Sync for Android, Fliq Calendar, and Fliq Notes. Fliq Calendar only works with Android 2. Interface, Setting Up Sync, and Extras. When you first run the PC software, you are presented with a set- up dialog that tells you to download the three Android apps. You can then connect your PC and phone via a Wi- Fi network or Bluetooth connection, but not via a USB cable. Bluetooth sync requires Android 2. The dialog is simple enough, and two phones I tested paired quickly.
So, strike one: you can't just sync all your stuff over a cable. Your PC needs to have a wireless connection, so this could be a real problem for the many people who use desktop computers.
The interface for the Missing Sync for Android PC program feels incomplete and difficult to use. The program appears as one window with many buttons and tabs. The main screen has 1. Calendar, Contacts, Call Log, Notes, SMS Log, Sync Media, Create Ringtone, Preferences, Sync History, Shop, and Install Files.
If you click the File or Help tabs, you get access to seven more buttons. Sadly, there is no minimize button, so it just sits on your desktop until you quit. To set the program up, you have to click through up to 1.
There is no Sync All button on the desktop, but there is a button that initiates a sync inside the main Android app (but won't sync calendars or notes). The program does have some pluses over traditional PIM syncing software. It can sync your SMS messages and your call log—both which can be helpful in some cases. The ability to create ringtones with a ringtone editor on the desktop is a nice addition.
The ringtone editor works well—just select a song from your library and clip the two sides for where you want the tone to start and end. However, you can also just use Ringdroid for this purpose once you have music on your phone. Problems and Conclusions. Missing Sync for Android is frustrating to use. First off, not being able to use a USB cable to sync everything seems pointless and perverse.
Any user who only uses a wired connection to access the Internet is out of luck. A spokesperson from Mark/Space responded by writing: "Currently, Android OS does not provide APIs to reliably transfer information like contacts and calendars via USB."Since the app doesn't have a trial period, you can't check to see if it works with your phone before you buy it—a big issue with a $4. And the whole thing just feels like a kludge. Three Android apps? Really? If you're going to take the time to set this annoying software up, you might as well just save your money and use the other kludgey- but- free syncing methods out there.
In terms of all- in- one syncing competition, Companion. Link appears to be the only other company offering a product like this. They are offer an Android- to- PC syncing experience for $3. However, both of these options aren't completely necessary because there are free solutions that aren't quite simple, but often will work better than the Missing Sync. For syncing media, there is double. Twist (Free, ), a free i. Tunes- like program that works very well.
The Missing Sync for Android feels like overpriced, beta software. I can understand that the Android OS is hard to program for, but that is no excuse for a frustrating user experience and kludgey software. Forty bucks and you can't minimize the window or sync all the data via a USB cable?
